Costa Rican Typical Oxcart


Due to the hard conditions in the months of hauling, when the terrains were muddy and sloppy, in the mid nineteenth century the oxcarts were constructed with solid wheels in Costa Rica in order to prevent mud accumulations withing the wheels.

The technique of manufacturing developed rapidly, colors and designs have been a peculiar note of the country. For a hundred years, until the entry of vehicles painted carts were the backbone of the country's economic development. The Costa Rican cart design to overcome the difficulties presented by our old ways as: mud, hills, sharp curves, hard rocks, deep gorges and others.With the strengthening of the coffee, it intensifies the use of the cart, which becomes the best tool in the effort of producing and exporting country for the golden grain. The road to Puntarenas requires the multiplication of carts. Coffee and carriage ensured Costa Rica's commitment to develop and to generate public wealth. The golden age of the carts can be located from 1850 to 1935.
