Ostional Wildlife Refuge is open from 8 am to 4 pm and guided tours are available. The refuge is situated between Punta India and Nosara River, in Guanacaste. The refuge area is 246 hectares, 15 kilometers in the beach shoreline from where it spreads miles far to the Pacific Ocean.
The refuge is important to conserve wildlife in the area, especially millions of turtles, seabirds and other marine animals. Turtles come to lay their eggs to the beach from July to December (the peak season is in August and September).
This refuge is the only place in the world where is legal for local people to harvest a certain amount of the eggs. In the refuge there are unique examples of the planet´s fauna. Plant life of the area is sparse, trees and fauna which are adapted to sandy ground: palms and coconuts among others.
